On the other hand, West Indies haven't won a series against serious opposition in more than a year. To salvage this one, they need their pace spearhead Jerome Taylor to fire; in the absence of Fidel Edwards there's more responsibility on Taylor, whose performances have mirrored West Indies' fortunes in this series. Unless he and his pace-bowling colleagues provide the early breakthroughs, West Indies will have a tough time against the savage hitters in the Indian middle order.

Sthalekar believes Australia will bounce back

Lisa Sthalekar hopes that Australia can overcome its World Cup heartbreak by putting on some excellent performances at the ICC World Twenty20 2009.

Australia takes on New Zealand in a three-match T20 series, which begins in Brisbane on Monday, and she revealed the squad is excited about having an opportunity to get back playing with her national side.

“The players have all arrived in Brisbane and everybody is looking forward to playing. It is ten weeks since we last had a game and it will good to play these three games,” said Sthalekar.

“Although we are playing for a trophy, it is also a chance to fine tune our preparations, so hopefully we will hit the ground running when we arrive in England.”

The pre-event favourites for the ICC Women’s World Cup, held earlier in the year, will be looking for a better performance than at that tournament when it surprisingly finished fourth, and Sthalekar believes the ICC World Twenty20 2009 is a perfect chance to make amends.

“There is still disappointment there but it is exciting that we have a chance to change the perception of the team in such a short space of time,” she said.

Australia will play in a tough group at the ICC World Twenty20 that includes New Zealand, West Indies and South Africa and Sthalekar admits she can’t wait to bat on the Taunton wicket.

“The last time I played at Taunton it played like a road and lots of runs were scored so I am looking forward to playing there again,” she added.

BLACKCAPS trounce Netherlands in final training camp match

The New Zealand team arrived in London on Saturday ahead of next week’s start to the ICC World Twenty20 tournament – after delivering a solid thrashing to The Netherlands to end their training camp on a high note.

Saturday’s game at Wormsley, near Oxford, saw the BLACKCAPS score 194-8, before dismissing The Netherlands in the 20th over for just 104.

Batting first, the New Zealanders took control from the top of the innings, with Brendon McCullum plundering 27 off a hapless Dirk Nannes’ first two overs, including five fours and a six.

McCullum and Jesse Ryder put on 46 for the first wicket, and McCullum went on to amass 62, including eight fours and two sixes.

Neil Broom (28), Scott Styris (26) and Jacob Oram (20) provided good support as the BLACKCAPS went confidently through to the total.

In reply the Dutch side never got their momentum going as the BLACKCAPS bowlers dominated the innings. None of their batsmen made it to 20, and tight bowling prevented The Netherlands from constructing any significant partnerships.

The Netherlands never looked like mounting a serious challenge to the target and were dismissed in the 20th over for 104.

James Franklin was the best of the New Zealand bowlers, taking 3-10 off four overs, while Daniel Vettori continued his good form with his 3-24. The other wickets were shared by Iain O’Brien, Jacob Oram, Scott Styris and Brendon Diamanti.

This victory gave the BLACKCAPS four wins from four matches from their training camp.

The previous day saw the side beating the Professional Cricketers Association Masters XI which included four players from the BLACKCAPS squad, as well as former England strike bowler Darren Gough.

Ross Taylor continued his big hitting success with an innings of 74 which included three fours and seven sixes. Martin Guptill scored 56 and Jesse Ryder 37.

Styris then led the chase for the PCA side with an extravagant 51 that included six fours and three sixes. Peter McGlashan (26) and Neil Broom (20) also got amongst the runs against their own team but the Masters XI fell short, finishing their 20 overs on 144-8.

O’Brien was the pick of the BLACKCAPS bowlers with his 3-14 from three overs, while part-time bowler Guptill picked up two wickets.

Coach Andy Moles said he’s been pleased with the team’s form during the practice games.

“We’ve left Wormsley on a high,” he said, “with plenty of good performances with both bat and ball. All our batsmen have got among the runs, we’ve been bowling well and there’s been a real intensity in the field.

“I’m confident we’re moving in the right direction, but we all know we’re coming into the hard part now.”

Moles said the training camp – based at the picturesque Wormsley ground in Buckinghamshire – has definitely been the right approach to the build up for the ICC World Twenty20.

“The facilities have been excellent, the wickets are of a high standard and staff have been extremely helpful. It has helped create a great environment for the team to adjust to the conditions and work on their game.”

The BLACKCAPS now play official warm-up matches against India at Lord’s on Monday, and against Australia at The Oval on Tuesday.

Their first competition match is against Scotland on Saturday.

Baker bowls West Indies to victory

West Indies’ Lionel Baker took 3-22 to help his team win by five wickets against Ireland in an unofficial warm-up match ahead of the ICC World Twenty20 2009.

Electing to bat first, Ireland struggled against the Caribbean bowling attack with only John Mooney (20 runs in 20 balls) and vice captain Kyle McCallan (25 runs in 19 balls) making major contributions. Baker’s three-wicket spell was ably supported by fellow bowlers Sammy (2-8) and Pollard (2-26) as they dismissed the Irish batsmen for 119 runs with four balls to spare.

In reply, West Indies reached the target in 17.5 overs after some late hitting from vice captain Denesh Ramdin (24 runs in 22 balls) and Dave Bernard (16 runs in 10 balls). The side faced a brief initial scare when its openers were both dismissed by Boyd Rankin, who was the pick of the bowlers for Ireland with his 2-18.

The two sides will meet again for a warm-up game on 2 June at the Oval

Tendulkar confident India can retain WT20 trophy

India’s most successful batsman Sachin Tendulkar feels that his team can retain the World Twenty20 trophy which it won at the inaugural edition in 2007.

The Indian team departed for England yesterday with the hope of defending the World Twenty20 trophy it won in South Africa two years ago.

All members of the current Indian squad were part of their respective franchises for the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL). Both batsmen and bowlers tasted success at the second edition of the IPL.

Except for strike bowler Zaheer Khan, the rest of the Indian unit looks fit and raring to go.

Indian veteran Sachin Tendulkar, who has excused himself from the shortest format of the game, has full confidence of his team winning the trophy for the second consecutive time when the tournament gets underway on June 6.

"I have full confidence in the team. It’s a solid team that has got explosive batsmen and some wonderful bowlers in their attack which looks fantastic," said Tendulkar.

"The team has got some world class players as well.”

Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag were at their explosive best in the inaugural World Twenty20 in South Africa but the flashing opening duo seemed to have lost some steam while representing their franchise, Delhi Daredevils, at the IPL.

However, Tendulkar does not see this temporary dent in form as a harbinger for the World Twenty20 2009.

The master batsman said, "Form can sometimes go down and you may not play well at times. But I believe a world class player is always a threat to the opposition and I’m really glad that we have so many world class players in the side.”

Since the advent of Twenty20 cricket, many purists have criticized this new format of the game as opposed to the longer versions – Tests and one day internationals – which are said to be the best judge of an international player.

But Tendulkar has a different viewpoint on the issue.

"I think it is good for cricket. It generates interests in areas where we don't have major tournaments. It’s fast, exciting and you know the result within three hours.”

"It’s exciting for someone who has just started watching cricket. Maybe it would help him to subsequently graduate to watching ODIs and Test matches as well. That’s why I feel it’s good for cricket.”

Zaheer expected to be fit before India's first match

India’s premium quick bowler, Zaheer Khan, who was injured in the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL), is expected to be fit ahead of India’s first game of the forthcoming ICC World Twenty20 2009.

Zaheer, India's leading bowler over the last two seasons, underwent rehabilitation in South Africa after picking up an injury during a stint with his IPL team, Mumbai Indians.

The left-arm pacer injured his bowling shoulder while diving to stop a drive in a game against Bangalore Royal Challengers which ruled him out of the remainder of the tournament, which was held in South Africa.

“Zaheer Khan is not one hundred per cent fit, but we hope he would be fit by the time of our first match (on June 6 at Trent Bridge)," Dhoni said in his pre-departure media conference in Mumbai.

"We are hoping he would get fit by the 2nd or 3rd (of June)," he added.

Ironically, Zaheer had missed the maiden edition of the ICC World Twenty20 event in South Africa due to an ankle strain. His presence in the side this time around will not only lend experience but also sharpen India’s fast bowling.

He had an excellent tour of England when India last traveled there in 2008 and in 2006 he played for Worcestershire claiming 78 wickets from 16 matches, which also earned him a recall to the national side.

Defending champions India open its campaign against Bangladesh on June 6 at Nottingham.

Bangladesh extends its winning streak

A five-wicket spell by Rubel Hossain helped Bangladesh defeat Scotland by six wickets in an unofficial warm-up match ahead of the ICC World Twenty20 2009.

Hossain picked up 5-16 to help his side limit Scotland to 141-7, picking up the prize wicket of Neil McCallum, who posted his fifty in 37 balls. Opener Gavin Hamilton was the next top-scorer with his 45 in 41 balls.

In the next innings, Mohammad Ullah top scored with his 46 runs in 35 balls that saw his side home with eight balls to spare. The Bangladesh run-chase faced a brief initial scare when it lost two early wickets until opener Tamim Iqbal (33 in 21 balls) and Shakib al Hasan (36 in 29 balls) kept the run chase steady to win by six wickets.

Bangladesh will next take on Australia in a warm-up game on 1 June while Scotland will face England the next day.
